Protest against killing; Tiddim road blocked

Imphal, February 21: Claiming that the person who was shot dead by Imphal West Police Commandos during an alleged shoot out at the crossing of Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai Leirak Achouba Maning and Longjam Leirak under Imphal Police Station last night was an innocent civilian, local people blocked the Tiddim Road for sometime today.

The slain person has been identified as Pebam Inao alias Ojit (40) s/o late Pakchao of Kwakeithel Lamdong.

He was a married man having four children, two daughters and two sons.

Residents of Tiddim Road protest the killing of youth maintaining that he was innocent, the road was blocked for some time


However, according to police report, Inao was earlier arrested in connection with a case under FIR No.206 (11) 04 u/s 25(1-A)/1-AA) A Act and 400/511/34 IPC of Singjamei Police Station for belonging to a gang of arms dealer/supplier for extortion.

Intelligence input revealed that he was actively involved in extorting money in the name of KCP and PREPAK, SP of Imphal West District Clay Khongsai said.

On the contrary family members claimed that Inao was an innocent person.

According to family sources, Inao had gone along with his wife Chaoba on their Kinetic Honda to Khwairamband Market for the daily collection of money loaned out to the vendors.

While his wife was going to the market to collect the money, Inao went to a hotel behind Mapal Kangjeibung to eat Khichri since he was hungry.

However, when Chaoba came out after her work he was not in the hotel.

In protest against the killing, infuriated local people mostly women came out to block the Tiddim Road at around 11.30 am today.

However, police arrived in time and dispersed the protestors.

With family members refusing to take back the body, it is still lying in the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

On the other hand, the suspected UG shot dead by Imphal West Police Commandos during an alleged encounter at Kwakeithel Moirang Purel under Singjamei Police Station on February 18 has been confirmed as a former UNLF activist who was out on bail.

According family members, the deceased identified as Khagembam Angousana alias Angamba (30) s/o Sanatomba of Kumbi Lai Santhong was a member of proscribed UNLF some 10 years back.

After he was arrested by the police and released on bail, since then leading a normal married life.

After marrying a girl from Wahengbam Leikai Parking Maning, Angousana was staying along with his wife at Goa and Mumbai working in some companies.

As the date of delivery of their first child is due in March, they came to Imphal on February 9 and staying at the place of his wife.

In the morning of February 19 at around 9 o'clock, Angousana reportedly had some conversation over his mobile phone with another person before going out.

He was reportedly last seen going along with a person from near the Sulabh complex at Wahengbam Leikai Parking.

The post-mortem examination of the body was conducted at the mortuary of RIMS today and later handed over to his family members.
