Lakhs of people affected by flood

Imphal, August 19: Vast areas of agricultural lands and homestead lands in the valley districts of the state are still under the stagnant flood water.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been affected, thousands of houses have been damaged by the fury of floods and above all 10,000 hectares of paddy fields with standing are still under the floodwater.

Though the IFCD claimed that the temporary closing of the depressions at the riverbanks at 51 different places have been completed physical verification tells otherwise.

This is the biggest flood the state has ever faced.

Thousands of people are still sleeping on the road together with other domestic animals.

Depression of the Iril River on the left side was left unrepaired as there is no way to reach the depressed portion.

The depressed portion is left unplugged.

50 houses, 25 paris of paddy field all with standing crops have been submerged.

The residents are staying at on the road.

The floodwater has also affected Wangkhem Loukon, Andro Huikap.

50 percent of the 2000 hectares of paddy fields at these areas are still under the flood water.

The floodwater from Thoubal river inundated Khuman Loukol, Poiroupat, Andro for the last six days.

300 houses have been damaged and 1000 persons have been affected by the floodwater.

The people at this area are doing pisciculture but all have been washed away.

The depression of Sekmai River destroyed standing crops at 1000 hectares of paddy fields at Wabgai and Kakching areas.

The flood also has damaged 500 houses.

The depression of Wangjing River at Sangai Yumpnam affected 300 houses and affected 500 hectares of paddy field.

The press team could not reach the spot, as the approach was too slippery for the two Tata Sumo vehicles.

The depression of the Sekmai River at Wabagi occurred on August 13 around 5.30 pm.

The local people repaired the damaged portion by hiring 20 expert divers.

But the damage had already been at the area.

The house of Shanitikumar and others nearby were completely ravaged by the flood, which continued to flow in continuously for three days full with gushing sound.

Nothing could be taken out from their houses.

That day Shantikumar kept Rs 52,000 inside his pillow cover but the amount together with other houses hold items had been carried away by the flood water.

He was on his khudei for the last six days all having been carried away by the floodwater.

The materials were carried away by the floodwater as far as eight kilometers away from his house.

Now he has received information that his steel almirahs and furniture items have been picked up at Hiranmamei, which is eight kilometers away from his house at Wabgai Awang Leikai.

The depression at Wabgai Keirak Chuthek Leikai was caused by the abandonment of Sekmai river project.

The channel is too narrow for the huge volume of water brought down by the river.

The depression was left unplugged for the reason not known to others.

The floodwater was still continuing to flow in.

There is no solution.

No truck can ply on the newly raised river embankment.

If the rain stops a JCB machine will be pressed into service and the river channel will be widened, the IFCD source said.

As the floodwater continued to flow in fish farms have been damaged.

Properties worth cores of rupees have been damaged at Khordak/Nomgaikhong.

At Hiyanglam the flood has ravaged 130 houses at Tera Pishak.

The floodwater accumulated at Khoidum pat and Kharung pat have been contaminated.

The local people are facing drinking water as the contaminated water cannot 'be consumed.

The overflowing water at Laphupat Tera inundated vast areas of land at Arong, Nongmaikhong, Khordak.

Water level at these areas is continuing to rise.

A motor boat was pressed into service but it is of no help as its movement has been blocked by the suspension bridge constructed near Phoubakchao bazar.

The water level is too high at the area.

The residents at the area have fled.

The locals complain of non-availability of relief materials.

Drinking water is really a problem, they also said.
