Imphal, September 15: Reacting to the recent legislation passed by the DAN Government in Nagaland allowing affiliation of schools from other States to the Nagaland board of School Education, the Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (Desam) has insisted that Manipur assembly adopt a resolution to counter move of the neighbouring State.

Speaking to reporters at its Keishampat head office today, president in-charge of the student organisation PC Newton observed that neither is the decision of the DAN Government of Nagaland practicable in all its aspects nor should affiliation of schools from the State of manipur be allowed affiliation to the NBSE.

Newton also observed that the DAN Government legislation of September 12 intended upon entertaining affiliation of schools of manipur to the NBSE is politically motivated with the state assembly in mind and a glaring example of driving a wedge to create communal enmity within manipuri society apart from being a direct affront to the territorial integrity of the State.

Asserting that no schools established in the State should be allowed to affiliate to NBSE, the DESAM functionary also asked convening session of the State assembly to discuss the matter and chalk out appropriate steps to fustigate move of the DAN Government.

Contemplating that the affiliation move is a covert operation by the Nagaland Government towards realisation of integrating naga-inhabited areas under the greater Nagalim doctrine, Newton also maintained that the affiliation move has nothing to do with protection of cultural rights of the Naga people of Manipur.

With education covered under the concurrent list of the Indian Constitutions 7th Schedule, the Central Government needs to intervene and prevail upon the DAN Government to review its decision.

Further contending that the DAN Government in collusion with some Naga MLAs had misinterpreted contents of the Indian Constitution concerning protection of cultural and educational rights of the tribal people, he also affirmed that DESAM takes strong note of the DAN legislation and would not relent on the issue.

The contention that affiliation to NBSE and subscribing to syllabi of the nagaland board would boost promotion and development of history, culture and overall environment of the Nagas, newton alleged that the concept is being propagated by a handful of individuals to mislead the Naga masses.

Substantiating his viewpoint, the president in-charge cited vagueness in NBSE-prescribed textbooks where no mention is made or lessons taught on culture, history or geography of the naga people and pointed to text books of Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM) that contains 30 percent education on local context in addition to offering learning/reading of no less than 14 tribes in their respective dialects and appearing examinations in their own mother language.

Prevailing upon the Naga community to be wary of individuals with vested interest, Newton also reminded that endeavour of some Naga leaders in wooing hundreds of Naga candidates appear in the last matriculation examinations under NBSE only compromised prospect of the students as only 18 percent of the total number could cross the most crucial hurdle in a students careers.

Directing his tirade against the NSCN (IM) and unnamed Naga leaders, the student leader alleged that rather than take the Naga struggle to its logical end, the Naga rebel group has been turning barrel of the gun to settle score on community and tribal level and creating fissures amongst various communities that had been living in Manipur for ages.

Categorically stating that no forces on earth could segregate people of Manipur on communal line, the DESAM leader further cautioned that sinister designs of vested Naga leaders will be exposed and a time will surely come when such leaders would be ostracised by the Naga people.
