Unabated armed attacks on Minister

Imphal, August 12: Suspected armed underground activists launched a series of bomb attacks at the Leimapokpam Mayai Leikai residence of Minister of Agriculture, Social Welfare and Minor Irrigation Nameirakpam Loken under Nambol Police Station of Bishnupur district last night.

The incident occurred at around 11 pm yesterday.

Out of the four bombs lobbed one after another, one of them landed in the courtyard of a neighbor identified as Yumnam Amu (55) causing damages to the CI sheet roofing of the house.

No one was injured in the incident and the Minister was also at his second home at Sangaiprou at the time of the attack.

In connection with last night's attacks, Nameirak pam Sanjoy, younger brother of the Minister informed that sounds of explosion were heard three times in quick succession.

Two of the bombs may have been exploded simultaneously.

One of the bombs landed and exploded at the drain age located on the side of the front outhouse and two others at the courtyard.

The CI sheet roofing of the outhouse and the walls of the house have been damaged in the explosion.

Police have recovered four levers of Chinese made hand grenades from near the gate of the house.

A team of district police today arrived and inspected whether any more bombs were lying around or not.

Why and who were re sponsible for the attacks has not yet been confirmed, Sanjoy added.

After the bomb attack, the unidentified armed per sons also reportedly opened blank-fire around 10 rounds before taking to their heels.

It is suspected that the unidentified armed persons have come on foot.

Among four brother siblings of Minister Loken, two are staying at Leimapokpam while Loken and another brother at Sangaiprou.

Counting the incident of leaving a bomb fitted on ah LPG cylinder near the gate and open firing at the Leimapokpam residence, yesterday's bomb attack was the third time that unidentified gunmen have targeted the Minister.

Last year too, a bomb hurled by armed cadres of KCP MC exploded at the Sangaiprou residential compound of the Minister.

In protest against the .last night's bomb attack, Meira Paibis of the area staged a Wakat Meepharn at Leimapokpam Bazar today.

Condemning the incident, All,Nambol United Clubs Or ganisation and Tiddim Road Unique Gamy Player's Union, Nambol, in separate statements, have also appealed to all concerned not to repeat such incident in future.
