Mob bays for culprit's blood, AMSU's office

Imphal, January 06: Enraged public of Thangmeiband area attacked and ransacked the office of AMSU at DM College campus today evening and set afire two vehicles outside the office of the student body on the charge that AMSU had handed over the accused Rome to the police.

Earlier at about 6.30 pm, meira paibis of Tera areas came to the office of AMSU and handed over Rome to them after the UNLF had turned over the accused to the women folk.

Before the attack, a huge police force led by the SSP of Imphal West came to the office of the student body and asked that the accused be handed over to them.

AMSU at first refused and suggested that Rome would be handed over at a public place to the police tomorrow.

However the police persisted and managed to convince the student body to hand over Rome to them.

Soon after the police left with the accused, enraged public of Thangmeiband area converged at the area and started attacking the office of the student body charging them of handing over the accused to the police.

The mob ransacked the office of the student body and set two wheelers parked outside the office of AMSU.

The situation was brought under control after police arrived and opened blank fire and tear gas shells.

Later speaking to the media, the AMSU president said that as a student body they have to abide by the law of the land and had to hand over the accused to the police.

He also expressed regret that the police failed to provide them security even though it was agreed before that police would protect the office of the student body before the accused was handed over.
