Imphal, June 02 2009: The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur has revoked its decision to impose a State-wide general strike for 120 hours as well the state of 'emergency' for sometime.

The general strike has been deferred considering the existing economic condition of the State and the negative impacts it entailed, said a press release issued by DESAM.

Yet, DESAM, in association with the people, would be launching various forms of agitation if the students arrested by police in the aftermath of Prof Islamuddin's killing are not released without any condition at the earliest.

In case, the Government fails to redress the issue even after the agitation, a general strike may be imposed anytime, hard and difficult it may be to the people.

Alleging that the Government has been detaining students under NSA, DESAM said it has dubbing civilians as insurgents and working to abolish student bodies so that the Government can have a free run.

Calling upon all civil society organisations, Meira Paibis, local clubs and the general public to stand united against such activities of the Government, DESAM appealed to all sections of the society for cooperation in its movements against detention of students.

The student body also reminded that the KYKL has already claimed responsibility for killing Prof Islamuddin and that one IRB personnel reportedly involved in the killing has surrendered to police.

Meanwhile continuing to exert pressure on the Government for unconditional release of the student leaders arrested after the assassination of Prof Md Islamuddin by KYKL inside the University campus on May 25, students and Meira Paibis demonstrated in different parts of the State today.

Holding placards with slogans like 'We condemn assassination of Prof Islamuddin', 'Arresting student leaders is against the wishes of the people', 'Release arrested student leaders unconditionally', 'What is the Government going to gain from targeting students who are the future pillars of the society?', the students and Meira Paibis staged protest demonstration and later took out protest march in different parts of Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur district.
