Imphal, September 01: The 15 hour bandh called at Yairipok to protest the shooting of a woman on her legs by unidentified gunmen on August 30 at Shantidan, Yairipok was total today.

The bandh came into force from 5 am and went on till 8 pm.

Yairipok falls under two Assembly Constituencies, Andro AC and Wangkhem AC.

Responding to the call of the bandh and to express their strong protest against the attack on the woman, tyres and branches of trees and bamboos were piled up in the middle of the roads and burnt to dissuade anyone from violating the bandh.

Large number of women belonging to different communities came out on the street to enforce the bandh and no one, including cyclists were allowed to pass through.

Though there was relaxation for educational institutions, religious related activities and for the sick and ailing, the bandh supporters checked each vehicle to verify whether the vehicles intercepted come under relaxed category.

All the bandh supporters blocked all vehicular movements and a number of people coming to Yairipok on buses and those who had to pass through alighted from their vehicles outside Yairipok and proceeded on foot.

The bandh was called to protest the shooting of the woman, Samurailatpam Sandhyarani of Yairipok Laimanai.

On August 30 at about 7.30 pm the woman along with her husband was returning home after closing their shop at Yairipok Shantidan when the gunmen opened fire injuring her leg.

Significantly some miscreants had placed a bomb at her shop on August 21. During the last few years, shopkeepers and traders have had to face the threats of many armed outfits in connection with monetary demands at Yairipok.

Many of their shops had come under attack and there have been many instances of leaving bombs at the residences too.
