Imphal, June 24 2010: The Zeliangrong Interim Body (ZIB), the All Zeliangrong Students Union (AZSU) and the Zeliangrong Students Union Manipur (ZSUM) have apprised the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways today on the state government of Manipur decision to hand over the charge of National Highway 53 to state PWD from the Border Road Organisation (BRO).

The three Zeliangrong organisations said that the PWD which cannot even maintain the streets in the Imphal Municipality areas properly will find too hard to take care of the NH-53 .

In a missive to the Union minister, the Zeliangrong bodies said that the Manipur government only decided to take charge of the NH-53 after the Naga students had imposed blockade on the two national highways in Manipur sector.

They also alleged that the sections of NH-39 from Maram to Imphal and from the state capital to Moreh town bordering Myanmar maintained by the National Highway Division of the state PWD but very often it has been witnessed of protests by civil organisations against the deplorable conditions of the national highway.

Given this situation, the ZIB, AZSU and ZSUM requested the Union minister not to entertain the state government's decision.
