Fasting MPP leaders arrested

Imphal, June 10 2010: MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang and vice-president Sapam Dhananjoy who have on fast unto death campaign since June 7 demanding lifting of total economic blockades on National Highway 39 and National Highway 53 have been arrested by police under Sections 309 and 334 of the IPC.

The two MPP leaders were arrested by a police team led by Imphal West Additional SP Herojit, the Imphal West OC and the City Police.

The police team then took the two agitating MPP leaders to RIMS for health check-up.

Then they were produced before JMIC Imphal West which remanded them to Judicial Magistrate for 15 days.

Subsequently, Dr N Nimaichand Luwang (64), son of late N Thambou of Yairipok Bishnunaha and Sapam Dhananjoy (59), son of late S Lula of Khongman Okram Chuthek were taken to security ward of JN Hospital.

Later speaking about the MPP leaders' agitation and the subsequent arrest by police, MPP Legislature Wing leader O Joy said that the protest agitation can be considered as success.

However, he condemned the demeanour of the police personnel who came to arrest the two agitating leaders.

Saying that Dr Nimaichand and Dr Dhananjoy would continue with their protest until their demands are met, Joy informed that a joint meeting of the MPP would be held tomorrow.

He categorically stated that the party will not seek release of the arrested leaders on bail.

Continuing with the hunger strike launched by the party president and his deputy, MPP Youth Front president M Maniton Mangang, Youth Front president Th Dilip Meitei and MPP Minority Cell chairman Md Aurangazeb launched hunger strike for the same cause since 1 pm today.
