Imphal, June 07 2010: MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang and vice-president Dr S Dhananjoy have launched a fast unto death campaign from today putting up three basic demands.

The Manipur People's Party has been demanding opening of both NH-39 and NH-53, withdrawal of Thuingaleng Muivah from places near border areas of Manipur and expulsion of all NSCN-IM cadres from the territory of Manipur.

Speaking to media persons in front of MPP office where he and his deputy are undertaking the fast unto death stir, Dr Nimaichand said that the campaign was launched according to a resolution adopted by the party's working committee.

On account of the continuing blockade which is already 57 days old, lakhs of innocent people have been pushed to brink of starvation.

Prices of all essential commodities have shot up beyond the reach of the common people.

Even as paddy cultivation season is already in, farmers are caught in a very miserable condition as diesel for running power tillers and other machinery is either unavailable or alarmingly scarce.

MPP cannot remain silent in the face of such grim situation.

That was why the fast unto death campaign until the highways are opened was launched, the MPP president said.

Clearance given by the Congress-led UPA Government for Th Muivah to visit Manipur has caused widespread turmoil in Manipur.

The Centre by allowing Muivah to visit Manipur was plotting to create communal tension and enmity among the people of Manipur, he alleged.

Foreseeing the possible consequences of Muivah's visit to Manipur, the MPP has already informed central leaders through many memoranda against Muivah's so called homecoming.

He also decried the silence and inaction of both the Central Government and State Government when the situation in Manipur is worsening day by day to a very critical stage.
