Imphal, February 05 2010: Two underground activists were reportedly killed during an encounter between the UGs and a team of Imphal East district police commandos at Kamu Chingjin Awang Leikai under Lamlai police station in Imphal East district around 6.15 pm today.

Police said, one Universal Machin Gun (UMG), one Lathod gun and one AK 56 rifle along with an empty magazine, six live rounds and three Lathod bombs have been recovered from the two deceased UGs.

The two dead bodies are yet to be identified.

A team of Lamlai police station picked up the two dead bodies and kept at the RIMS Morgue for post mortem and identification.

Both the deceased wore camouflage shirts and civil trousers.

They could be around 22/23 years old, police said.

According to police, on receiving a reliable information that a group of armed UG cadres were about to come from Lamlai areas towards Sanjenbam village, a team of Imphal East district police led by SP Th Radheshyam and Second OC Commando John rushed to the spot to block the UGs movement.

As the police team took position and moved toward Kamu Chingjin on foot, an unknown person switched on torchlight upon the approaching police personnel.

The moment the UGs recognised the approaching police personnel, they started firing.

The police personnel retaliated and a gunfight ensued that lasted 10 minutes.

When the firing from the UGs side had stopped, the police conducted a search operation, and found two bullet-riddled dead bodies.

The arms and ammunitions were recovered from the spot where the two dead bodies were found lying, police said.
