Shop owner killed, two UGs killed in follow up

Imphal, March 23 2009: UGs intruded into the busy Thangal Bazar, the heart of the Imphal city, and shot dead proprietor of a radio sales and servicing centre in the broad day light today.

In the follow up action police commandos killed two suspected undergrounds.

In another incident one suspected underground was also killed by a combined force of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 AR at Tonsen Lamkhai under Sugnu police station tonight around 7.30 pm.

The proprietor of the Janta Radio Sales and Service Centre, located opposite to Hotel Anand, Thangal Bazar, Deepak Gupta (38) son of Shyamsundor was shot at point-blank inside his shop by three gunmen suspected to be UGs in the broad day light at around 3 pm, eyewitness accounts said.

No sooner had the non-local shop owners wasgunned down, the two suspected undergrounds were killed by the Imphal west police commandos at Naga Mapal Kangjabi Leirak just 300 meter away from the place where the non-local was shot dead.

Police said suspected UGs were killed while they tried to escape, but locals of Kangjabi said they were killed after being nabbed.

One of the three assailants fired at Deepak at the left cheek.

He succumbed to injury later at the hospital.

He was survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

The family has been residing at the shop since long.

As told by a salesman of the shop, a woman with a child and two men entered to the shop posing as customers.

One of the male assailants sitting very close to the proprietor insisted him to have a confidential talk which Deepak refused insisting to have the talk in the shop.

When Deepak refused to do so, one of the assailants took out a small gun and shot at him and left the place quickly, the salesman added.

A team of City police arrived at the shop while the salesmen of the shop were trying to rush him to hospital.

He was immediately rushed to the RIMS hospital where he succumbed to injury.

On hearing the shooting incident, Imphal west police commandos rushed to the area and cordon off from all directions to hunt out the assailants.

They detained some people of aged ranging from 15 to 45 and conducted verification for the assailants.

In the further operation, police commandos killed two youths suspected to be underground activists at Kanjabi Leirak.

They also recovered one hand grenade, a 9 mm pistol loaded with two live rounds, a Kinetic brand scooter with two demand letters of Rs 10 lakhs each signed by one Pamel of KCP, commander, Imphal west district fund raiser in-charge from the possession of one of the slain suspects.

The two suspects were killed by a team of police commandos who were at Kangjabi Leirak, a possible route to escape by the attackers, said SP Imphal west, L Kailun who personally supervised the entire operations.

Police commandos on reaching to the area detected three persons moving in suspected manner amidst the dispersing crowd.

When challenge, suspects opened fired towards the police commandos which they retaliated and killed two of them.

One escaped taking advantage of the crowded area.

However, police could not identify whether the slain men were the assailant killing the proprietor of the Janta Radio.

The dead bodies have been deposited at the RIMS morgue for identification.

In another counter insurgency operation of the combined force of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 AR, a suspected underground was killed at Tonsen Lamkhai under Sugnu police station of Thoubal district tonight at around 7.30 pm, police report said.

A 9 mm pistol recovered from the slain suspect with some rounds of ammunitions whose identity could not be established immediately, the report added.
