MPP stages rallies against blockade

Imphal, May 21 2010: Denouncing the prolonged blockade being imposed along NH-39 and NH-53 by some hill based organisations, mass protest sittings and rallies were staged at different places of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts under the aegis of the Manipur People's Party (MPP) today.

MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang and vicepresident L Jatra led the protest demonstration at Khangabok.

At Waikhong Bazar, a sit-in-protest was staged with MPP secretary in-charge M Ashok leading the protesters.

They submitted a memorandum to the Chief Secretary.

Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the protest demonstration, Dr Nimaichand remarked that the State Government has been a total failure.

Saying that the Government was unable to protect the people, the MPP president alleged that the Government exists just for name's sake.

The protesters led by Dr Nimaichand also submitted another memorandum to the Thoubal DC.

On the other hand, a peace rally was also taken out by the people of Heingang A/C, Kshetrigao A/C, Lamlai A/C, Khundrakpam A/C, Wangkhei A/C and Yaiskul A/C.The rally started from Lamlong oil pump and marched towards Porompat DC office where they submitted a memorandum to the Imphal East DC.

In Imphal West district, a sit-in-protest was staged at Langthabal Lep Mayai Leikai with MPP Imphal West (II) district committee president M Ibobi leading the protesters.

Former Union Minister Th Chaoba led another protest demonstration at Nambol Bazar.

Speaking at the protest site, Chaoba urged upon the State Government to explore all avenues to bring a solution to the impasse.

He also blamed the Government for their failure to ensure supply of essential commodities to the people.

Placards which read as "Open the National Highways", "We demand essential commodities", "We want rice", "We want petrol and diesel", "Save people's life" etc were put up at all these protest venues.
