Youth's killing sparks protest

Imphal, March 15, 2010: A combined security team has reportedly slain a youth in a shoot-out amid allegation that the victim was actually whisked away from home last night.

Protesting the killing of Chongtham Sanjoy alias Nanao alias Tocha (21) s/o Ch Iboyai of sekmaijin Maning Leikai infuriated locals barricaded the Mayai Lambi route today.

A police report said Sanjoy was gunned down by a combined team of Thoubal district police commandos and troops of 21 Assam Rifles on the intervening night of March 14-15 on the Tejpur side of Nungjubi hillock, which about two kilometres south-west of Kakching police station in Thoubal district.

During the shoot-out a UG suspect has been killed from whom one 9 mm pistol, a magazine with three live rounds and a hand-grenade with detonator were recovered, the maintained.

However, the victim turned out to be same person whose abduction from near his home at around 9.10 pm yesterday was intimated to Kakching police station through a formal complaint.

Local sources said Sanjoy, along a distant relative (brother-in-law) Yumlembam Bobo (27) was returning home after having dinner at the latter's residence when commando personnel, who came in a Gypsy and a Rakshak jeep singled out Sanjoy.

It is said that the police commandos left Bobo with the warning to remain silent and took Sanjoy away.

A mobile phone handset and a torch light belonging to Bobo were also taken away by the commandos, the sources maintained.

Inspite of being told to remain silent the abduction was conveyed to the local pradhan who subsequently filed the complaint at Kakching police station.

For further inquiry locals approached kakching police station this morning only to discover Sanjoy's corpse laying there.

They further disclosed that Sanjoy was a member of the proscribed KYKL but dissociated from the outfit on health ground (kidney problem) about two years back.

Having undergone treatment of the kidney problem, a recuperating had been working in a fish farm.

Accusing security forces of killing Sanjoy in fake encounter, infuriated people of Sekmaijin resorted to shutting down of the local market place in addition to putting up road blockade on the Mayai lambi route from around 8 am today.

Later in the day a public meeting approved formation of a JAC to initiate further course of action against the killing of Sanjoy.Among others the meeting resolved to demand for appropriate punitive action against the security force personnel involved in the killing, paying ex-gratia to Sanjoy's family and a suitable Government job to a family member of the deceased.

Entry of strangers into Sekmaijin from 6 pm till 6 am has also been prohibited as per decision adopted at the meeting that further resolved against claiming Sanjoy's body till the demands have been translated into action.

even though the road blockade agitation was suspended from late afternoon the locals asserted that more intense agitation would be launched.
