Imphal, May 15 2009: AT LEAST 11 persons including one who succumbed to his injuries he sustained when some unknown persons shot him on April 17 last have been killed in different insurgency related incidents today.

Six cadres belonging to the banned Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) were killed in a gunfight with a combined force at Koutruk hill under Sapermaina police station this morning around 5.30 .

Five AK-56 rifles, one 9 mm pistol and two China-made hand grenades along with a huge quantity of ammunitions were recovered from the possession of the six deceased cadres along with one mobile handset and some clothes.

They were killed in a joint operation launched by the Imphal West unit of the police commandos, troops of 12 Maratha Light Infantry and 39 Assam Rifles, police said.

The slain cadres of the KYKL were later identified as Leishangthem Sumon (19), son of Budha of Koutruk Ching Leikai, Ngangom Priyojit @ Nongo (17), son of Subhas of Phayeng Awang Leikai, Ngangom Guni (24), son of Langbanjao of Phayeng Ching, Keisham Sanatomba (31), son of late Tomba of Lamshang Heibongpokpi, Ngangom Amuthi (22), son of Nillamani of Phayeng Ching, and Mayengbam Chaothoi (23), son of Narahari of Tezpur Awang Leikai.

As regards to how the incident occurred, commanding officer Colonel NS Mokha of 12 Maratha LI said that on getting a tip off of the presence of some KYKL cadres at Koutruk area, the combined team launched combing operation from about 2 am last night.

He said, the combined team entered the area leaving behind the vehicles at Senjam Chirang.

After tracking for about 5 km before reaching the Koutruk village, the combined force was divided into three sections and surrounded the village.

When they reached the hill range, the presence of some underground cadres there was confirmed.

They were found sleeping on the ground on tarpaulin with blankets including those guarding the place.

The troops could detect the sentry keeping vigil towards the hill side constantly.

But he could not detect the troops surrounding them from the other directions.

As part of the strategy of the operation, the troops on the hill side fired some rounds of shots.

Instantly the six cadres on sentry duty woke up and after taking position, started firing towards the troops.

As troops on the other sides were already very close to them, they retaliated and killed the six.

Personnel of Imphal west police commandos said that based on a tip off of the presence of some KYKL cadres at Koutruk, they had conducted search operations two times earlier.

But in both the operations, they managed to escape leaving behind their belongings.

But, on the third attempt, they could kill all the six cadres.

In another incident, a combined force of Imphal west police commandos and 12 Maratha LI killed two youths suspected to be underground cadres at Kanchak Yangbi Loukon under Mayang Imphal police sta- tI tion this afternoon at t around 3.30 pm.

From the slain suspects one Ak-56 loaded eight live rounds, two China Make hand grenade recovered, police repon said.

Meanwhile, dead body of two men apparently shot dead by some miscreants last night was recovered from Khurkhul Singjanggpokpi under Sekmai police station this morning.

They' seem to be age around 27 and bullet injury marks were found at the heads.

The dead bodies are yet to retrieve from the spot by the police till late this evening.

On the other hand; a youth who engaged in construction works of drain at Yorbung and was shot at to injure on the.

night of April 17 by some miscreants at the mqkeeshift work shed identified .as Oinam Amuthoi (48) son of late Sanajaoba of Nambol Leimapbkpam Awang Leikai died today at Shija hospital after long struggle for life.
