Police crackdown on protesters likely

Imphal, June 09 2009: The Manipur Police Department will issue an order for the arrest and detention of all protesting leaders, including Meira Paibis (women activists), associated with the burning the effigies of chief minister, O.Ibobi Singh and the director general of police (DGP) in the near future under National Security Act (NSA).

The state police have also filed an FIR against some leaders of the Meira Paibis in the state.

An officer of the state police department informed the order will be issued keeping in view the increasing and frequent protests of various organizations and students bodies demanding the release of the five student leaders who were detained under NSA in connection to the assassination of Prof.Islamuddin.

The later part of the month of May and early part of June saw a great uprising of students and Meira Paibis from various corners of the state demanding the release of the student leaders who were detained under the NSA.

Earlier, in the aftermath of the murder of the Manipur University professor, thirteen student leaders were arrested however eight released on surety bond and five detained under NSA.

And in a view to control the ever rising protest from students and Meira Paibis, the state police department has issued the order, reminded the officer.

Meanwhile, the Lamlai Police station had lodged an FIR No.46 (6) 09 under section 117/148/436 Indian Penal code (IPC) against the Lamlai Chalou Nupi Chaokhat Thourang Lup of Lamlai in Imphal East who had protested and burnt the effigy of the chief minister demanding the release of the five student leaders on Saturday.

However, there have been no reports of any arrest of the women leaders by the police relating to the matter.
