Kohima, May 14 2009: In continued attack on business community in Nagaland, a non-local businessman was shot at by unknown gunmen while police managed to nab two extortionists and also rescued a non-local farmer in separate incidents in different parts of the State during the last 24 hours.

Confirming the report on the first incident, two unidentified gunmen shot at one person at Naharbari, Dimapur last evening when he refused to pay the assailants money.

The victim identified as Md.Hussain was shot by two persons, who came on a motorcycle to his paan shop at Naharbari along the National Highway-39 .

It is reported that the miscreants or habitual extortionists used to regularly harass small businessmen but yesterday demanded more money and when refused, they shot at Hussain inflicting injuries on his neck.

Sources said that the public tried to nab the miscreants and even bashed them up, but while they were attending to injured Hussain, the miscreants fled with the motorcycle.

Later, police launched a manhunt and recovered the motorcycle and the .22 pistol used in the crime.

At the time of filing this report, the miscreants has not been arrested.

In the second incident, swift action of the police led to the nabbing of two extortionists claiming to be Central Executive Council (CEC) Members of Naga National Council (NNC) while extorting money from shops near Phoolbari, Kohima in broad daylight yesterday.

Police on receiving specific information about a group of miscreants going around extorting money from shops in the town swung into action and apprehended two of the extortionists while at least three others managed to escape.

The arrested were later identified as Mukheme Yim and Hekuto Sema, both claiming to be CEC members of the NNC (Non Accordist).

Police recovered some amount of money and documents from their possession.

In the third incident, a joint combing operation conducted by Nagaland and Assam police, one non-local cultivator was rescued yesterday at around 8:00 am from Kushiabil, Dimapur.

Police sources said that the victim identified as one Prem Kumar Kurmi, s/o Lt Bgai Nath Kurmi was abducted by armed miscreants numbering around 8-10 from his residence at Beganabil near Bokajan town on May 8 last.

The victim was then taken towards Kushiabil and kept blind folded at a secret hideout where he was physically tortured.

The miscreants later demanded a ransom of Rs.10 lakh for his safe release and after negotiating it was agreed to pay Rs.3 lakhs.

However before the transaction could take place, the victim was rescued by the police from Kushiabil.

However no one was arrested and investigation is going on to nab the culprits.
