Driver badly injured on NH-53 attack

Imphal, July 04, 2010: One truck driver sustained injuries when some unidentified miscreants attacked a convoy of vehicles travelling along NH-53 near Noney last night.

The injured driver identified as Asem Sanayaima (48) of Thoubal Haokha said that a convoy of trucks including five trucks heading for Namrup, Assam to ferry fertilizers were attacked by unidentified persons near Noney with stones and other projectiles at around 9 pm.

A volley of stones hit the windshield of his truck and broke it.

Some of the stones flew in through the broken windshield and struck him on the right eye and nose.

Sanayaima said that others might also have suffered damages.

Though Sanayaima was grievously injured, he somehow, managed to drive his truck till the Assam Rifles post at Awangkhul.

There he was given first aid.

He came to Imphal on a passenger bus this morning.

He has been admitted in Shija Hospital.

Taking strong exception to the attack, secretary of the Manipur Truck Owners� Welfare Association, M Tomba urged for deployment of State forces between Tupul and Irang along NH-53.Explaining about the preference of State force, Tomba said that when transporters complain about similar problems along the highway to para-military forces, they were told to ply on their own.

In the meantime, a Maruti van travelling to Nagaland was intercepted by supporters of the Transporters� and Drivers� Council, Manipur at North AOC at about 11.30 am today .

Goods loaded on the van bound for Zakhama, Nagaland were pulled down and handed over to the owner.

The van was also let off after deflating a tyre.
