Brutal Phayeng murder: Police clueless, villagers suspect local hands

Imphal, January 29 2010: Though the police are still clueless, villagers of Phayeng have pointed to the possible involvement of some local gang members in the recent brutal murder of a mother and her daughter at Phayeng Ching Khunou Nongaband.

Angom Ongbi Chanbi and her daughter Ibemcha alias Meneka have been reportedly picked up by some unidentified persons from their house in the intervening nights of January 12 and 13 .

But they were found brutally murdered in the morning of January 23 at Shamba paddy field, located just around 900 metre away from the house.

Along with registering a case, Lamshang police have been investigating into the incident.

So far, the police have recorded the statements of six relatives of the victims but still clueless.



The three children of Angom Chanbi Devi who, along with her eldest daughter, was murdered.


OC of Lamshang police informed that the investigating police team have not been unearthed any clue.

So the attention is now being directed on the motive behind the murder.

There is suspicion that the mother and the daughter may have been murdered after being raped and the police have seized the post-mortem report of the victims.

But the police declined to give any comment on whether they were killed after being raped or not.

Meanwhile, protesting the killing, people of three localities of Phayeng today staged a Wakat Meepham and held a meeting at Phayeng Sorok Leikai.

Those who spoke in the meeting expressed strong suspicion over the possibility of involvement some local gang members in the killing.

Talking to this reporter after the meeting, some of the local Meira Paibis pointed out that there are some gang members indulging in anti-social activities like snatching money and other valuable goods from passers-by in Phayeng Ching Khunou Nongaband area.

Arresting these gang members and questioning them would lead to the murderers.

Secretary of Phayeng Ching Khunou Meira Paibi Angom Ongbi Memchoubi informed that yesterday the villagers decided that they would themselves round up and hand over the suspects to the police if the police have the names of the suspects.

A letter has also been written to the local Pradhan in this regard.

If culprits were turned out to be from Phayeng Ching Khunou, exemplary punishment should be given to them with public knowledge.

In today's meeting, it was decided that the JAC would start launching various democratic agitations since the Government has failed to implement any of the agreement signed with the JAC.
