Meira Paibis protest 'senseless' killing

Imphal, July 09: Questioning how could a person be killed simply without understanding the value of human life, Meira Paibis of Kwakeithel Akham Leikai, Moirengpurel Leikai and Dewan Leikai jointly staged a Wakat Meepham at Kwakeithel Moirangpurel today to register protestagainst killing of Langpoklakpam Bimolchandra of Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai and demanding punishment of his killers.

The protest demonstration was staged from 10 am to 4 pm.

Placards and festoons inscribed with slogans like 'Don't kill anyone for ransom','Every armed persons should understand the value of human life', 'Stop the trend of killing people after being picked up', 'Teach moral lessons to police commandos', 'Give befitting punishment to commandos involved in killing of Bimolchandra', etc were used during the demonstration.

Talking to mediapersons, one of the protestors said that killing of people without any reasons by armed personnel deserved strongest condemnation.

She said that no one would have raised any objection if the charges against an accused person had been established and he was given due punishment in accordance to the law of the land and there is law court for that.

However, in Manipur, husbands and children of many women have been killed after they went out of the house without any reason and charges were levelled afterward.

How long can such mothers whose children have been killed and women whose husband have been killed continue to bear with such injustice, he asked.

Another woman protestor observed that if the situation continues to remains this way, then the day would not be far when the entire male populationof Manipur would be wiped out giving a serious impact on the socio-economic condition of the State.

Body identified: Identity of the person shot dead by a combined team of Thoubal police commandos and 34 Assam Rifles on July 5 night at tekcham Maning Leikai has been established as one Pukhrambam Kisan alias Rockyson (24) s/o P Modhu of Kakching Wairi Thongam Leikai.

According to sources, Kisan used to run a pharmaceutical store (Robin Pharmacy) at Lamphel Kombirei Keithel area and left behind his six month pregnant wife and a boy child.

His body, kept at RIMS morgue for the past few days, was shifted to Lilong PHC for the post mortem and later handed over to family members today.

Security forces had claimed to have gunned down Kisan in retaliatory action with one 9 mm pistol and some live rounds listed at recovered items from his possession.
