Commando sustained bullet injury in a shoot-out with suspected cadres

Tamenglong, March 09 2009: One personnel of Manipur Police commando sustained bullet injury in a shoot-out with suspected cadres of the proscribed RPF at about 4 pm today.

The incident occurred in a house located near the first gate of Manipur University.

The encounter ensued when a team of Imphal East commandos, acting on a specific tip-off that some RPF cadres were putting up at a house located in Kha-Naorem Leikai to the West of NH-39, just a few metres North of MU 1st gate moved in in civilian fatigues.

As the commando team approached the house, shots were fired towards the commandos from inside the house injuring one commando personnel.

Soon after, the UG suspects fled from the house, said a police source.

The injured commando personnel has been identified as one Maisnam Suresh (28) s/o Joy of Kontha Khabam Chumbreithong.

He was hit by a bullet on the left shoulder.

He is undergoing treatment in RIMS.

Suresh is a Havildar of 6th Bn MR but attached to Imphal East commando.

With reinforcements coming from Imphal East commandos, Imphal West commandos and troops of 28 AR, a search operation was conducted in the area after the shoot-out.

Imphal West SSP L Kailun also visited the spot.

The search operation continued till evening.

In the course of the operation, one Chinese hand grenade and some live rounds of pistol were recovered from the house belonging to one Soibam Iboyaima (60). The grenade was found inside a bag while the live bullets were found inside a purse, suspected to be belonging to the UG suspects.

Earlier one motorcycle (Apache) having registration number MN-01Q/5808 was recovered from the house.

It is likely that the motorcycle was for use by the UG suspects, informed the source.

Five family members of the house including the owner were summoned by police for questioning.
