CRPF jawan hurt in bomb blast

Imphal, November 21: A CRPF jawan sustained injuries in a bomb explosion set off by suspected UG cadres at Takyel Kolom Leikai under Lamphel police station along NH 53.The remote controlled bomb was reportedly planted at a road side tree.

According to information received from the spot, troops of 8 Bn CRPF were on ROP duty while troops of 22 Maratha Light Infantry were patrolling the area on foot.

At the time when the explosion took place, a convoy of Assam Rifles comprising of four vehicles were also escorting students to school.

Just as two vehicles of the AR convoy went past the spot, the bomb exploded.

However, as the two rear vehicles stayed back, there was no casualty to the AR personnel nor any damage to their vehicles.

But a CRPF personnel who was on ROP duty there suffered injuries.

He is identified as sepoy Harbhir Singh (27) of 8 Bn CRPF E-Company presently posted at Tombisana School, Assembly Road.

The battalion headquarters is located at Loktak Project.

The CRPF jawan is being treated at RIMS and his condition is said to be stable.

Under the impact of the explosion, a large chunk of the tree trunk was blown away while tin roofs of some nearby houses were damaged by the falling tree branches snapped by the explosion.

Police later recovered a few battery cells from the spot.

On hearing news of the explosion, CRPF DIG, SP Imphal West and MLA Sapam Keba rushed to the spot.

After the explosion troops of 22 MLI, using metal detectors, conducted an intensive search operation for any left over bomb.
