Imphal, May 20: Attributing defeat of Democratic People's Alliances candidates in the two Lok Sabha seats of Manipur to disunity among the alliance partners, Manipur People's Party president and MLA Okram Joy Singh termed the 14th Lok Sabha polls as 'selection' and not an election.

Speaking to newspersons today the outspoken politician alleged that police commandoes indulged in large scale proxy voting in Inner seat that ensured the victory for Congress candidate Dr T Meinya whereas in the Outer Manipur parliamentary Constituency polling and during the adjourned polls an underground outfit intimidated electorates to cast their votes for the outfit's sponsored candidate Mani Charenamei.

Joy also charged that Electronic Voting Machines introduced by the Election Commission of India was converted into 'proxy machines' by both the ruling Congress and the underground outfit.

Substantiating the charges, the MLA said reports have been received of police commandoes resorting to fake encounters to scare away voters so that the police could resort to mass scale proxy voting for the Congress candidate in the Inner seat.

Joy even went to the extent of accusing Dr Meinya of resorting to proxy voting several times with the State security personnel actively assisting the ruling party in selection of its nominee.

Similarly in the Outer Constituency, the cadres of the under outfit were scattered throughout the polling stations during polling to ensure 'selection' of Mani Charenamei, contended O Joy.

In contrast to the official poll figure, the number of genuine voter turnout for both the Lok Sabha Constituencies hardly touched the 20 percent mark, said the opposition member who further accused polling officials of being a party to the misconduct.

He said that at Lilong haoreibi polling station the number of actual polling figure and those declared after counting did not tally.

This proves the inefficiency of presiding Officers and other poll personnel.

A complaint would be lodged against the Presiding Officer, said O Joy.

Regarding polling for Outer seat, he said barring symbol of the Independent candidate Mani Charenamei ,symbols of other contestants were disfigured and covered with paper sheets.

Replying to a question on the defeat of Opposition candidates, O Joy cited differences among alliance partners that delayed finalising the name of consensus candidates.

He charged BJP bringing disunity amongst the the DPA partners saying that the party should be held responsible for the defeat faced by the Opposition bloc.

Though Joy acknowledged that cracks have appeared within the Opposition, he stressed that it would be wrong to say that the DPA has disintegrated.

On the post poll scenario at the Centre Joy described Sonia Gandhi declining the post of Prime Ministership as the correct decision as the BJP and its allies would have continued their onslaught which can affect governance.
