DESAM frontal body of KYKL, says DGP

Imphal, July 19 2009: Amid the stand off between the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) and the State Government over the detention of some leaders of the student organisation under NSA, in connection with the murder of Professor Md Islamuddin, DGP, Y Joykumar has asserted that DESAM is the frontal organisation of the proscribed KYKL.

In an interview to Guwahati based television news network, News Live, the DGP said, "This student organisation, so called DESAM, I think everyone in the State of Manipur is quite fully aware that this is a student frontal organisation of KYKL and with the backing of KYKL, the State has seen them taking the law into their own hands on a number of occasion.

"KYKL has come out claiming the killing of Professor Md Islamuddin.

Now as a policeman, as a police officer, we have to see who else are involved in the killing....

"The fact remains that there is a linkage between DESAM and KYKL".

Answering to a question from News Live, on whether other student organisations have links with banned organisations or not, the DGP replied, "There has been evidence.

We are contemplating action against them, including DESAM".

DESAM has called off its general strike.
