Ibobi looks to Delhi to defuse situation

Imphal, July 10: Stunned by the sudden escalation of violent protest in four hill districts in connection with the non-cooperation movement launched by ANSAM and the situation aggravated by IRB personnel assaulting two civilians at Senapati district, the SPF Government in an emergency meeting today has decided to seek Central government intervention.

Taking serious note of the unprecedented development in the hill districts of Senapati, Chandel, Ukhrul and Tamenglong in the backdrop of the indefinite economic blockade and fluid law and order situation arising as a consequence of the non-cooperation movement, the meeting focused on deploying Assam Rifles and CRPF personnel in addition to State forces to contain violent agitation.

According to a reliable source, the meeting held at the Chief Minister�s office chamber with O Ibobi Singh in the chair was also attended by senior Ministers of the SPF Ministry, Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary (Home), DGP, ADGP (L&O), both the IGPs and top officials of intelligence bureaus.

The deliberation which lasted for over two hours was unanimous in seeking Central assistance/intervention to end the ANSAM sponsored agitation as well as deployment of para-military forces to protect public properties in the four hill districts.

The source said that Principal Secretary (Home) AE Ahmad has sent a fax message to the union Home Ministry highlighting the ongoing ANSAM agitation which has disturbed the State�s law and order and hardships faced by the general public due to the imposition of economic blockade.

The emergency session which had a brief lunch interval further resolved against pursuing action oriented programme for the time being with all present mooting the suggestions that suitable time ought to be provided to ANSAM leaders to come to the negotiating table to sort out differences.

As precautionary measures to prevent further loss of public properties in the vulnerable hill districts, Assam Rifles and CRPF authorities have been intimated to deploy their men in adequate strength to assist the State forces, said the source.

For direct supervision of security arrangements DIGs M Karnajit, C Doungel, W Minakumar and MA Rahman have been stationed at Ukhrul, Chandel, Senapati and Tamenglong district headquarters respectively.

Clear-cut instructions to prevent recurrence of violent agitation and keep close a tab on the law and order situation in the four hill districts is informed to have been assigned to the four police officials.

In connection with the violent eruption of protests in these districts, DGP AK Parashar is informed to have chaired a separate meeting attended by responsible officials of the Police Department.
