Attributes of Women from North East By: - G.S. Oinam* |
Women of North-East have extra ordinary
characteristics influenced by their traditional norms,
culture and social rumblings! They are indeed
courageous, honest, tolerant and hard working. History
has witnessed the courage of these women who fought
bravely against British imperialism. The Women
uprising against British rule in Manipur, for
instance, is still fresh in people's mind. The women
organizations are the most effective pressure groups
in the North-East. Security forces find it
exceedingly difficult to control women led agitations.
Their agitation is always purposeful and reasonably
effective. The idea of women empowerment has already
been in existence since the time immemorial. In the
ancient tribal society, men were warriors, engaging
most of their time to protect its boundary. Therefore,
women feed their respective families, by earning and
working, besides taking care of their children. Their
skills on handloom, Handicraft and weaving are most
remarkable. However, women seem to lag behind in
politics. A gradual increase of active women
participation in politics in the States and national
level is another means to empower the Women of the
North-East.
