Every Indian citizen pays 3% educational cess towards the univerlization of the elementary education in the country. Therefore, it's our citizen's rights and responsibility to know how our children are /learning in the schools or how our money is being utilized.
The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) is a unique large scale effort undertaken by citizens of India to understand and to help in improving the status of elementary education in the country. ASER is an annual effort. It will go on until December 2010 - the deadline for achieving quality universal elementary education as declared by Government of India.
- ASER MANIPUR 2008 is conducted by the people of Manipur with the help of ASER Centre ( Assessment Survey Evaluation Research), New Delhi, which is facilitated by PRATHAM
- Dedicated volunteers (NGOs, Institute/Individual) carried out the survey in their respective districts last year.
- Coverage: All 9 districts, 223 Villages, 5232 households and 11046 (age 3-16) children in the state.
- With 40.3% of 3-4age children, Pre school enrollment in the state is very low. Proper attention should be emphases to sure none of the child in that age group are being neglected from the educational privilege.
- With 63.7% of children (6-14age) more than half the children in the state are enrolled in Private school.
- 2.6% of children (Age 6-14) are out of school in Manipur. In India as a whole the drop out rate is 4.3% for age group 6-14.
- 96.7% of children in Std 1-2 could read letters, words or more. Manipur occupies 3rd placed on the national chart.
- 19.7% of children in Std 3-5 can not read Std 1 level text. Mizoram is higher than Manipur by 6.9% point.
- 19.8% of children in Std 3-5 are not able to do subtraction or more. In India, the percentage of children in Std 3-5 who could not do subtraction or more is 45.1%.
- In Std 3-5, 36.7% of children cannot tell time of both clocks and 9.7% of children in Std 3-5 cannot solve currency task or currency related question.
