Contribution Request to help rebuild Manipur State Library

Activist agitating for the adoption of the indigenous script of Manipur had set fire to the State Central Library at around 4:30 PM IST on 13th April 2005. The fire destroyed books worth Rs. 10 crores besides damaging a large chunk of the building.

Besides the large number of important documents, books and articles, the fire damaged computers and accessories kept for public usage at the Community Information Centre, which is attached, with the Library office building.

Education is what our parents aspired for us. We aspire the same for our children. In modern times, the education system relies on books and documents, which is the medium where the information is stored and passed on from generation to generation. We learn about old times through what has been Manuscripted from those times. We have seen gems of human talents in their poetry and stories written by them.

All would agree the importance of books in the society.

There is a growing concern amongst the citizen of Manipur and others across the world of the loss that Manipur is experiencing which is caused by the aftermath of the Library being burnt down. Voicing the request of the Head Librarian of State Library H Devendra, Team E-Pao would like to request each of you to contribute books/documents/literary artifacts/educational video/educational audio materials from your personal collection to rebuild the destroyed Library.

"To revive and help in newly setting up the State Central Library which has been reduced to ashes in a devastating fire set by Mayek activists on April 13, Chief Librarian H Devendra appeals to all the people in the State who love the Library to donate at least one book from their private collections.

So far Professor Sanajaoba Singh of Khurai Lairikyengbam Leikai, Prof Md Bajaouddin of Sora Kakching and M Kandesh Singh of Singjamei Chinga Makhong have donated books to the library"
