Man shot over ransom

Armed youths last night shot the caretaker of a brick field in a suspected case of ransom, barely weeks after a relatively new armed group set aflame the diesel dispensing unit of an oil-pump here also on the issue of ransom, reports our Lamka correspondent.
Tongneh, 50 a native of D Phailen was shot by three armed youths on his left leg around 8PM at GL Brick field located near Kaprang along the Khuga river bank, about 8 kms from here.
He was the caretaker of the brick field whose owner, Lunkholal Lhungdim, said they have been receiving monetary demands from some people who refuse to reveal their identity.
The brick field proprietor, according to his spouse, has been receiving calls and paper chits asking him to pay up Rs.5 lakhs from the past week but without disclosing their identity or affiliation.
As they have received an ultimatum to pay up on Sunday, last night's shooting is suspected to be related to the monetary demand.
'I am told that the perpetrators were quite young,' she said adding, the care taker was with a driver who manages to escape from the armed youths and later took his friend to the hospital.
The injured man was operated upon by doctors today at the District Hospital Churachandpur where he is undergoing treatment and is still in too weak to recollect the events.
