Over 80% cast votes in Thongju, Thangmeiband bye-polls

Imphal, November 21 2015 : An estimated 89.59% and 85.39% of the total electorate cast their votes in the bye-elections to the two assembly segments of Thongju and Thangmeiband respectively on Saturday.

There will be re-poll in one polling station in Thongju Assembly Constituency (A/C) and the re-poll is likely to be held on November 23 .

Electorate of both the constituencies cast their votes from 7 am till 4 pm at the bye-elections.

No untoward incidents were reported during the polling.

However, re-poll will be held in a polling station under 5-Thongju A/C as there was a technical snag with the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).

The EVM at the 5/25 Torban Kshetri Leikai Primary School started showing number 511 when a voter cast his vote just after the 500th person at around 11.30 am.

Polling personnel reported the problem to the RO and immediately halted the voting.

The polling station is said to have a total of 967 voters.

In the Thangmeiband A/C, percentage of vote cast was high as an estimated 88.26% cast their votes at polling station no 9/1, 89.1% at polling station no 9/2, 94.7% at polling station no 9/3, 90% at polling station no 9/4, 92.4% at polling station no 9/5, 86.5% at polling station no 9/6, 90.7% at polling station no 9/7, 89.1% at polling station no 9/8, 90.3% at polling station no 9/9, 85.1% at polling station no 9/10, 88.5% at polling station no 9/11, 85% at polling station no 9/12, 91.3% at polling station no 9/13, 89.9% at polling station no 9/14, 88.8% at polling station no 9/15, 88.1% at polling station no 9/16, 88.5% at polling station no 9/17, 75% at polling station no 9/18, 85.4% at polling station no 9/19, 89.2% at polling station no 9/20, 86.9% at polling station no 9/21, 87.1% at polling station no 9/22, 88.6% at polling station no 9/23, 91% at polling station no 9/24, 90% at polling station no 9/25, 92.1% at polling station no 9/26, 91.6% at polling station no 9/27, 87.7% at polling station no 9/28, 90.8% at polling station no 9/29, 89.4% at polling station no 9/30, 88.5% at polling station no 9/31, 86.9% at polling station no 9/32, 89.4% at polling station no 9/33, 86.6% at polling station no 9/34, 58.6% at polling station no 9/35, 62.4% at polling station no 9/36, 58.4% at polling station no 9/37, 55.7% at polling station no 9/38, 62.3% at polling station no 9/39, 67.9% at polling station no 9/40 and 87.6% at polling station no 9/41 .

EVMs and polling materials of Thangmeiband and Thongju A/Cs have been shifted to strong rooms of DC Imphal West Complex, Lamphel and DC Imphal East Complex, Porompat respectively.

Counting will held on November 24 .

In Thangmeiband AC, three contenders namely BJP candidate Kh Joykishan, Jyotin waikhom of Indian National Congress and Dr G Tonsana Sharma of Manipur Democratic People Front (MDPF) contested the election while Dr G Tonsana Sharma of MDPF, Bijoy Koijam of INC and Th Bishwajit Singh of BJP were in the fray in the Thongju assembly segment election.
