Nine service weapons snatched away

In yet another daring attack launched by suspected NSCN-IM cadres, nine service weapons were confiscated from IRB and Manipur Rifles personnel posted at Nungkao.
A large number of suspected NSCN-IM cadres wearing full combat dress and wielding sophisticated weapons barged inside the 9th IRB and 6 MR post of Nungkao, overpowered the security forces and confiscated nine service weapons before fleeing from the camp at around noon today.
Most of the IRB and MR personnel were away from their post as they went out for routine ROP duty along Imphal-Jiribam highway when the suspected NSCN-IM cadres barged into the camp and overpowered the few IRB and MR personnel present there, sources informed.
It is reported that the suspected NSCN-IM cadres numbered more than 100 .
The weapons which were snatched away included four SLRs, four Insas Rifles and one AK Assault Rifles, the sources said.
The service weapons were snatched away from five MR personnel and four IRB personnel.
Security reinforce- ments have been rushed to Nungkao both from Imphal and Jiribam.
Notably, Nungkao is located about 50 Kms away from Jiribam district headquarters.
Sources further informed that more than 250 NSCN-IM cadres are suspected to be present in Nungkao area.
However, unofficial sources said that the total number of weapons snatched away by militants was 20 .
