Imphal, January 09 2015 :
The 181st death anniversary of Maharaj Gambhir Singh was observed today at the late king's memorial complex located at Langthabal.
The death anniversary function was jointly organised by the State Archeology, Department of Art and Culture and Kangla Fort Board.
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and Langthabal A/C MLA Karam Shyam attended the function as chief guest and president respectively.
Offering of floral tributes to Maharaj Gambhir Singh and his brother Nar Singh was the main feature of the death anniversary function.
Speaking on the occasion, Gaikhangam exhorted all the people to emulate the lofty ideals and unflinching sense of patriotism shown by Maharaj Gambhir Singh.
People should learn from history, particularly the disastrous consequences Manipur suffered because of rivalry and fight for the throne between royal princes.

Maharaj Gambhir Singh was one courageous leader who took pro-active roles towards unification of Manipuri people who had been scattered far and wide.
The Deputy Chief Minister called upon the gathering to strive together without any discrimination among different communities so as to make Manipur a peaceful and prosperous State.
MLA Karam Shyam, while expressing keen desire to observe the death anniversary of Maharaj Gambhir Singh in a significant manner together with all public leaders, Ministers and MLAs, lamented that many Ministers and MLAs were staying away from such an important event.
If the death anniversary function should be held in such a casual manner, it's better to cut short the function by only offering floral tributes to the heroes, he said.
The Seven Years' Devastation is one event which would remain etched in the history of Manipur for centuries to come.
It was Maharaj Gambhir Singh who once again consolidated the Manipuri Nation after it was totally devastated by Burmese army for seven long years, Shyam reminded.
