Rape accused

An under trial rape accused who is on bail has reportedly joined the Manipur Police as an Assistant Sub Inspector and is currently undergoing police training at Manipur Police Training Academy, Pangei.
Family of the rape victim in a press meet at Tarung today condemned the authorities concerned for allowing a rape accused against whom a case is pending to join the police training course.
Achung Gangmei, grandmother of the victim stated that the accused Ashang Shimray was granted bail on health ground and he is presently undergoing ASI training at Pangei.
Ashang (29) s/o Awungshi Shimray of Dewlahland and Aboy Shimray (30) of Nagaram were accused of raping the minor girl in 2014.It may be mentioned here that the girl was 14 years of age when the incident occurred last year.
Achung further said that both the accused are drug addicts and had been kept at various rehabilitation centers across the State.
Many other crimes were also committed by the duo, she further alleged.
"If a rapist and a drug abuser like Ashang is set free among civilians, when he becomes a police officer, many such cases of rape will increase", added Achung.
She further said that the interim relief payable by the Government to rape victims is yet to be delivered.
She added that the accused family has been threatening them to withdraw the case by offering a compensation of Rs 10 lakh.
Categorically questioning if there is law in the State, Achung urged the Government to look into the matter.
The other accused rapist Aboy is currently lodged in Sajiwa jail.
