Two illegal migrants, one local arrested from Phayeng

Imphal, March 12 2023: Imphal West district police arrested two Myanmarese nationals, who illegally entered the state, and a local resident responsible for bringing the two as Christian missionaries, from Phayeng Kharang Khunou on March 9 .

Taking serious note of the incident, IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan has urged the people of the state to remain alert against illegal migrants and not to hide them as shielding them will be detrimental to interest of the state and its people.

Addressing a press conference at his office here on Sunday in the presence of DIGP (Intelligence) Ningshen Worngam and Imphal West SP Shivakanta, Dr Ranjan said that the government is carrying out operation to identify and detain illegal migrants.

As part of the operation, Imphal West district police arrested two Myanmarese nationals with fake Aadhaar cards along with one local resident, who helped in bringing in the illegal migrants from Phayeng Kharang Khunou.

The local resident has been identified as Angom Chinglen (34), son of Angom Ningthem of Phayeng Kharang Khunou.

The two Myanmarese nationals have been identified as Limdai Merr alias Solomon Merr alias Thongkhosei Hangsong (33,) son of Limpoiline, and his wife Veikhohat Hantu (29) of Layshi township, Sagaing Region, Myanmar.

Upon questioning, they revealed that Limdai Merr studied in Nagaland from 2008 and worked as a teacher in the neighbouring state.

After returning to Myanmar in 2017 where he remained as a pastor after getting married, he went back to Nagaland along with his wife in January this year.

Chinglen brought them to Manipur as Christian missionaries and kept them in his house with the promise of monthly scholarship from a Christian Missionary Group called Berean Multiplying Movement.

A case has been registered against the three at Lamsang police station under provisions of the Foreigners Act.

They were produced before the court on Monday and were remanded in police custody till March 14, the minister said.

Dr Ranjan cautioned that strict actions will be initiated against local people, who are involved in bringing in illegal migrants.

He also appealed to the public to inform nearest police station if they were suspicious about presence of illegal migrants in their localities.
