Imphal, March 02 2015:
A protest demonstration was staged today against attempts by some elements to change the alignment of Greater Imphal Ring Road at Meitei Keirang paddy fields which would be constructed by the South Asia Socio-Economic Association with financial assistance from Asian Development Bank (ADB) .
Speaking on behalf of paddy field owners who took part in the protest demonstration, T Mangi said that some influential people have been trying to alter the map of the Greater Imphal Ring Road at the cost of many underprivileged paddy field owners/farmers.
Those people have been lobbying with Government officials to re-align the same ring road.
After completion of the rehabilitation survey, a map of the 46 Kms long road was already published in The Sangai Express, Mangi said.
Meitei Keirang located within Heingang A/C in Imphal East district has around 60 hectares of paddy fields and the ring road would pass through the paddy fields for a length of about 5 Kms.
"We are not objecting to any development programme.
We are requesting the authorities concerned to construct the road according to the map already published.
Government authorities should not commit the blunder of going at the whim of a handful of individuals", Mangi said.
The Government should look into the matter else the farmers would be compelled to approach the Court apart from launching a series of agitation, he added.
