Not involved in Heirok violence: Congress

Imphal, October 27 2021: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesperson Kh Devbrata said that no Congress worker was involved in poll related violence that occurred recently in Heirok assembly constituency.

Addressing a press meet in the presence of MPCC general secretary L Tilotama at Congress Bhawan here on Wednesday, Devbrata said that the injured victim in the Heirok incident is said to be a worker of BJP but no Congress worker was involved in assaulting him.

The party shares the suffering of the injured person and his family.

During an internal investigation of the party, they found that Congress workers were not involved in the violence.

Even if there were rumours of a Congress worker assaulting him, it is not true.

The person, who is stated to be the perpetrator, will give full cooperation in the police investigation to find out the truth behind the incident, Devbrata assured.

On the other hand, even if anybody has solid evidence that the assault was carried out by any Congress worker, the party will have no objection in police taking up legal actions since the party does not condone any sort of violence, the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, considering the increasing trend of poll violence, Congress party will soon release guidelines for election campaign anda sub-committee has been formed to bring out the guidelines within seven days.

The guidelines will include various protocols related with flag hoisting, public meeting and Covid SOP among others, he revealed.

Congress has always been standing against poll violence and will continue to uphold the same.

The party strongly condemns the election related violence emerging in the state, especially in Heirok and Andro assembly constituencies.

The government needs to deploy adequate security personnel and take up pre-emptive measures to prevent such violence.

The violent incidents in Heirok assembly constituency are suspected to be an outcome of the successful flag campaign of Congress, which is even penetrating into the stronghold of other political parties.

There are reports of armed groups planning to storm the houses of Congress candidates, he said while urging the government to take up necessary actions to prevent any unwanted incidents.

Devbrata also expressed discontentment over failure of the government to control violence despite imposing restrictions under section 144 of CrPC.

Unless necessary steps are taken up to prevent escalation of violent incidents, it might spread to other constituencies as well.

In Andro assembly constituency, clash between the supporters of Shyamkumar and Sanjay is the main source of violence.

There were numerous complaints and reports of the violence in the initial stage but it escalated as the government failed to act in time, he lamented.
