Manipur ranks second in North East for Dementia cases

Manipur ranks second in the prevalence of dementia cases in the whole of the North East, according to H.Sanamatum Singh, vice chairman, National Alliance for Elder's People Livelihood Research Advocacy (NAEPLRA) and Chronic Diseases of India while speaking during the one day consultation programme on memory walk and Northeast state initiative on Dementia under the world Alzheimer's month 2014 September held at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
The consultation programme, jointly organized by the Regional Health and Family Welfare Training centre, Government of Manipur, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Nurses' Association, National Alliance for Elder's People Livelihood Research Advocacy and Chronic Diseases of India and Alzheimer's and Related disorders, Society of India, Manipur Chapter, Imphal was attended by Dr..SBimolakumari Devi, chief medical officer, Imphal West, R..KNayasana Devi, former chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board and also former director of Agriculture department, Dr.K.Shantibala Devi, vice chairperson and scientific chief patron (NAEPLRA) Chronic disease of India and ARDSI, Imphal, R..KTilotama Devi, principal, Regional Health and Family Welfare training centre, government of Manipur and P.Landhoni Devi, nursing superintendent, JNIMS, Imphal as presidium members.

H.Sanamatum Singh said that according to 2001 census, Manipur had a total population of 21,66,788 and ranked second in dementia cases with a total figure of 2758 cases of dementia of which 6.7% people above 60 years were dementia patients.
With a total population of 31,99,203 population in Tripura, the total number of dementia patients were 4437, with 7.3% people above 60 years with the disease.
As for Assam with a total population of 2,66,55,528, total dementia patients were 29881, with 5.9 % people above 60 years suffering from the disease.
Moreover, Meghalaya with a total population of 2318822, recorded 2027 people suffering from the disease and of which 4.6 % people above 60 years were dementia patients.
As for Arunachal Pradesh, with a total population of 10,97,968, 939 and Nagaland with population of 19,90,036, a total of 939 and 1701 were suffering from dementia respectively and it shares the same figure of 4.5 % people above 60 years suffering from it for both states.
