    Rape accused convicted

    Imphal, July 31 2010: An 18 year old rape case has been finally settled after the Session Judge, Imphal East convicted the accused and sent him to jail together with a fine of Rs 50,000 .

    The accused who has been sent to jail under IPC Section 366 (kidnapping) and IPC Section 376 (rape) is one Okram Abung alias Premjit s/o O Ibobi of Tabungkhok Mayai Leikai under Patsoi police station.

    Abung alias Premjit, now 35 years old, is an auto-rickshaw driver by profession.

    He reportedly kidnapped and raped a girl, then just 16 years old from Patsoi Part I on July 24, 1992 .

    In the final hearing of the case today, Session Judge, Imphal East Surbala sentenced Abung to seven years in jail along with a fine of Rs 50,000 for kidnapping the girl and another seven years with Rs 50,000 fine for raping the girl.

    The ruling of the Court came after a long drawn legal battle extending for 18 years following a complaint filed by the victim's mother at Lamphel police station.
