Imphal, April 27 2019: Governor Dr Najma Heptulla released a novel titled Peeshumlei, written by late Professor Nongmaithem Tombi Singh, at Raj Bhavan today.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Najma stated that Professor N Tombi was an educationist, seasoned politician, writer, journalist and a very popular cultural activist of the State.

Talking about the author's first novel, the Governor remarked that although the novel is a work of fiction, it also portrays the state of affairs in Manipur during the reign of Maharaja Bhagyachandra and several kings before him in the 18th century.

She stated that Peeshumlei is a praiseworthy endeavour on the part of the author as he paints a convincing picture relating to the cultural and social life of the people of that time, she remarked adding it underlines the hardship, exploitation and how the people nurtured and cherished their identity in the face of daunting challenges.

The Governor maintained that Professor Tombi had carved out a distinctive identity for himself in public life and also in the literary sphere as a prolific writer.

In a public life that spanned over more than five decades, Professor Tombi held several important posts in his political career including as Member of Legislative Assembly, Minister and Member of Parliament, the Governor mentioned.

She went on to state that the author, apart from serving as lecturer, in the field of education and literature, was the founder president of Cultural Forum Manipur, president of Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti, president of Natya Sabha and so on.

In recognition of his valuable contribution in the field of literature, the author was conferred 'Gang Sharan Award' and 'Sahitya Bhushan' by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad in 2002 posthumously, she mentioned.

She further stated that his dedication to the growth of Manipuri language, art and culture have been widely acknowledged by scholars of the State in their works.

The Governor expressed satisfaction on the three works of the author in English namely Khamba and Thoibi, Manipur: A study and Manipur and Mainstream have earned a huge acclaim not only in the State but also outside Manipur.

She encouraged all writers/authors to address social issues through their writings and raise awareness among the masses.

The book releasing function was organised by Ningthoukhongjam Chittamohini Devi and her family members.

E Sonamani Singh, eminent writer, Padmashri Ksh Thouranishabi Devi, renowned Guru of Nata Sankirtan and N Chittamohini Devi, publisher of the book were present as presidium members of the function.

A recital of the epilogue of the Novel was also presented by Laihui Ensemble as part of the launching of the novel.

Eminent writers, critics, scholars, thinkers, cultural activists and family members of (L) Prof N Tombi Singh were present at the function.
