Awangbow Newmai assures to work for improvement of Sericulture Department

Imphal, June 08 2020: Newly inducted Sericulture Minister Awangbow Newmai was given a reception and felicitated by the officials of the Sericulture Department in a 'reception cum felicitation programme', at the multipurpose hall, MSPMC, Sangaipat, Wangkhei today.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Awangbow Newmai said that he had close affinity with the Sericulture Department since he served as a Parliamentary Secretary (in charge of Sericulture) during the present Government.

Thanking the Chief Minister N Biren Singh for appointing him as the in-charge of Sericulture Department, he assured to work for the enhancement and improvement of the department and sought cooperation of all the officials and staffs.

He said that the State can be self-reliant by working hard in various fields and not have to depend entirely on the Centre's help.

Sericulture Department has full potential to be known for its silk production in the country and worldwide, he added.

Minister Awangbow said he will support feasible ideas suggested by the learned scientist and officials which will be beneficial for the department.

Stating that the department has been supporting weaker sections of the society by providing livelihood, he said that the department can work further to give more opportunities to the people of the State.

He also suggested to the department officials to organise an annual program where district level progress can be highlighted and possible works can be discussed.

Appealing to the officials and staffs to maintain punctuality in office, he stated that he will look into the attendance of the officials and staffs during the annual program.

The hard-working muster roll employees with maximum regularity/punctuality will be given incentives on the day of the annual program, he added and pledged to donate a one-day wage to the muster roll employees of the Sericulture Department.

Awangbow Newmai also inspected the Silk Reeling and Spinning Factory (SRNSF) weaving section, field of mulberry section, Mulberry Industrial Grainage (MIG) and also planted mulberry saplings as part of the observance of World Environment Day.

Ch Harendrakumar Singh, Deputy Director also presented a power point presentation on the "Role of Sericulture in Manipur" and highlighted the ongoing and upcoming projects of the department.

He also highlighted that around 17,481 families are engaged with the Sericulture activities, covering 782 villages and 32,000 hectares of land are being utilised.

He informed that Manipur is leading in the country in production of oak tasar silk and leads in the North East region in production of mulberry silk.

Director S Kunjakishore Singh, scientists of Regional Sericulture Research Station Imphal, District Sericulture officers and staffs of the Sericulture Department attended the function.
