Kamjong fest starts with call to conserve nature

Forest and Environment Minister Th Shyamkumar while inaugurating the second edition of Kamjong festival has urged the people of Kamjong to preserve the beauty of nature.
The Kamjong festival is held to promote tourism in the district Impressed on seeing the region covered with dense forest, the Minister announced that the State Government is extending financial assistance to those villages declared protected forest.
The visiting minister assured construction of a well equipped guesthouse at Kamjong headquarters next year and donated Rs 1 lakh to the organising committee.
Thangjam Arun Kumar proprietor Arun Enterprises dwelt on the potential and prospect of tourism in Manipur and added that besides generating earninng avenues for the people it also promotes exchange of culture of different communities.
Impressed with the bamboo made tea cup, he said such innovative idea needs to be encouraged.
Local MLA Leishiyo Keishing who presided over the function dwelt on the need to replenish the forest cover for the future generations.
Forest and people are closely associated, he siad and cautioned against wanton exploitation.
The MLA continued that once Hombill was found abundant in the region but now they have become endangered.
Headman Bungpa Khullen Mataimi expressed gratitude to the Minister for inaugurating the festival inspite of his tight schedule and added that it is a plastic free festival.
In the evening session well known actor Kaiku, artistes and rock bands from Imphal enthralled the crowd.
Kamjong is about 140 kms away from Imphal located at the extreme eastern region.
The two day event is organised by Kamjong Development Committee and Raizan Katamnao Long at Kamjong Public ground.
