Noise level : four coded areas

The State Government has categorised Greater Imphal into four coded areas for the purpose of implementation of noise standards.
According to a notification issued by the Forest and Environment Dept, Greater Imphal is categorised as A Industrial area, as indicated in the proposed Land Use 2011; B Commercial area—commercial area, airport area and bus terminus indicated in proposed Land Use 2011; C Residential area —residential and Government housing areas as indicated in Land Use 2011 and D Silence zone—100m around public, semi-public places, park and recreational open spaces; zoological/botanical garden; Govt schools, colleges, and universities; hospitals and health clinics; Kangla, Assembly, HC, civil secretariat complexes, City Convention centre; Raj Bhavan, CM's secretariat, VIP quarters, etc.
Further the notification restricted the use of PA system without obtaining permission or during night time, use of horns in silence zones in residential areas, sound emitting fire crackers in silence zones and use or operation of sound emitting construction equipment during night time in residential areas and silence zone.
Besides, the notification said that any offenders in silence zone would be penalised under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 .
The Govt notice also banned the use of horns or honking in some stretches of roads including Keishampat Junction-Raj Bhavan Gate, Raj Bhavan Gate-Palace Compound gate via Sanjenthong bridge, Kali Temple gate-PWD gate, hump bridge-western Kangla gate.
