Rape condemnations pour in

Even as four accused rapists have been arrested in connection with the rape of a housewife on March 22 in Bishnupur district, condemnations from various civil society organisations continue to pour in.
Strongly condemning the gang rape of the housewife, the Manipur State Commission for Women has informed that it would initiate investigation of the crime, which also involved IRB personnel.
In a statement, member secretary of MSCW, S Meghachandra Sharma conveyed that the Commission has sought a status report from the DGP Office over the incident.
Condemning the rape of the woman, Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland) has demanded payment of compensation to the rape victim under the SC/ST Atrocities Act, Government of India.
In a statement, the ZB pledged to continue pressurising the Government with like-minded civil society organisations until justuce is delivered to the victim.
The Baudi also expressed doubt over the motive of the Home Department for not taking action against the rapists till now even after their arrest.
It urged that no culprits should be covered up or spared for such inhuman acts.
Appeciating the swift action of the Bishnupur police in arresting the culprits, it deplored the manner in which the arms used in the crime was issued to the miscreants.
Demanding the termination of the two police culprits involved in the act, the Zeliangrong Baudi further expressed disapproval of the approach made by the parents of the rapists who persuade the victim's family to close the issue tacitly with payment of money.
Condemning the rape incident, Naga Peoples' Union, Imphal has demanded stringent punishment to the accused rapists.
Registering condemnation of the crime, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has demanded fitting legal punishment to the accused rapists including the two police personnel.
AMSU also pledged to join any agitation in collaboration with like-minded civil society organisations until justice is met.
It also shared the grief of the victim.
Meanwhile, Survival Action for Human Rights, Self Help Group (HIV/AIDS Widows), Young Women Help Organisation, Keishampat, and Momnu Eerikkhombi Lup (MEEKHOL) have condemned the rape of the woman and demanded fitting punishment against the accused rapists.
