Alzheimer's month observance launched

With an effort to spread awareness about Alzheimer's and dementia, the Trained Nurses Association of India, Manipur State Branch, Imphal along with JNIMS Nurses Association, National Alliance for Elder People Livelihood Research Advocacy and Chronic Disease of India and ARDSI, Manipur jointly launched the Alzheimer's Month celebration, 2015 at Lamyanba Shanglen today on the theme 'Remember me' .
Speaking at the opening event, Vice Chairperson and Scientific Chief Patron of NAEPLRA, Chronic Disease of India and ARDSI, Manipur Chapter, Imphal Dr K Shantibala Devi said growing old is mandatory.
When deprived of the needed amount of love and care, most old aged persons tend to develop signs of Alzheimer's.Living with someone with Alzheimer's is a challenging task.
The best thing the people around could do is consult doctor at the earliest stage.
Alzheimer's accounts for about 60-70 percent cases of Dementia.
The disease is most noticeable in the age group between 50 to 60 years and much earlier in cases of HIV patients.
The most common and early symptom of Alzheimer's is difficulty in remembering events.
As the disease advances, the person may develop problems with language.
Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer's Diseases than men, Dr K Shantibala stated.
Department of AYUSH Additional Director Dr RK Tilotama Devi; former Chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board and former Director of Agriculture RK Nayansana Devi; College of Nursing, Medical Directorate, Principal, Professor M Kumudini Devi; Nursing Superintendent, JNIMS, Imphal P Landhoni Devi and Trained Nurses Association of India, Manipur State branch president Th Nandarani Devi also attended the event.
