Alarm over the flowing water of Iril river originated from Senapati district turning greenish since yesterday, people of Keibi area in Imphal East District have stopped using the water and kept their cattles on reins fearing that the animals might strayed and drink the water.
When this reporter went to Keibi to confirm the report, it was found that the water flowing down the river has indeed turned into greenish colour.
Talking to this reporter, one Okram Premananda of Keibi Heikak Mapal informed that people of the area started noticing that the colour of the water flowing in the river has changed to green at around 10 am yesterday.
Since then, apprehensive of the worst, people of the area have stopped using the water and kept their cattles on reins to prevent them from straying into the river to drink water.
Premananda further informed that the greenish water spelt of pesticide used for killing mosquitos.
Meanwhile, in a statement made available to the press, Centre for Child and Youth Development, Keibi Mayai Leikai pointed out that water of the river has been polluted a lot as an outcome of incessant human activities like fishing through throwing of nets and application of Yai.
So it is apprehensive that the polluted water may cause various diseases.
Taking serious note of the water flowing in the river turning green since yesterday, the Centre also appealed to all concerned to restrain from using Yai or pesticide at the source of the river if they are at all using these substances for catching fishes.
The statement also draw the attention of the authorities concerned to find out the truth of the matter so that necessary preventive measures can be taken up.
