14th Great June Uprising, Unity Day observed in Imphal

Manipur on Thursday observed the 14th Great June Uprising Unity Day 2015 at Kekrupat, Imphal.
The main memorial function was organised by United Committee Manipur (UCM) and AMUCO (All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation) .
On this day of the year 2001, people of Manipur agitated in protest against the 'without territorial limit' clause that was included in the Bangkok Declaration as a part of the peace talk between Indian Government and NSCN (IM).
The protestors destroyed and set on fire the Manipur Legislative Assembly building, offices of political parties and several quarters of the then ministers and MLAs.
In an attempt to control the outrage, security forces resorted to firing which 18 persons were killed.

Since then, the day has been observed as the Great June Uprising Day.
The function started from early morning.
Thousands of people hailing from various communities including many students came to Kekrupat in Imphal and paid their homage to the departed souls of the 18 'martyrs' .
Leaders belonging civil organisations and from different communities spoke on the occasion recounting the heroic acts of the 'martyrs'.
The speakers reminded that all the communities residing in Manipur are like brothers and sisters and appealed to maintain peace, harmony and unity.
They also appealed and pledged to stand against any force that may affect or disturb the territorial integrity of the state.

To mark the occasion, a blood donation camp was also conducted at the venue.
The camp was jointly organized by the observation committee, private clinics, civil society organizations, student bodies in collaboration with JNIMS and RIMS.
Hundreds of people donated blood.
On the occasion, simple gifts were also presented to the families of the June 18 victims.
