Imphal, September 15 2023: The Congress party has asked the MLAs of the ruling parties camping at New Delhi to take the situation in Manipur seriously and refrain from beating a hasty retreat without making the Centre take a concrete solution to the ongoing violence.

The Opposition party also urged Chief Minister N Biren to accompany the MLAs in mounting pressure on the Central leadership to help end the violence.Addressing the media at Congress Bhavan today, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra asked why the Chief Minister didn't join the ruling MLAs who are at New Delhi to persuade the Central leaders to restore normalcy in strife torn Manipur.

Several MLAs had camped at New Delhi in the initial stage of the conflict too but they returned without meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the MPCC chief recalled.

There is no semblance of normalcy in Manipur even after over four months of violence and gunfights are still taking place at several foothills and periphery of the valley district, Meghachandra pointed out and accused the Chief Minister of taking the situation in Manipur lightly.

He continued that the protracted violence has taken a heavy toll on the people while many families have lost their beloved.

It would be very unfortunate if the ruling MLAs at New Delhi meet the Central leaders in groups instead of placing their demands together, the Congress leader maintained and asked why Union Home Minister Amit Shah suggested the MLAs to make groups for the meeting with him.

Is there any problem in meeting all the MLAs at once, Meghachandra asked.

He said that the Congress party won't object to meeting the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister by going to Delhi along with the Chief Minister and ruling MLAs if it will pave a way forward.

Saying that the Congress party doesn't want to do politics when the integrity of Manipur is at stake, the MPCC president assured that they will extend full support to any undertaking of the State Government which aims to secure the future and identity of Manipur.

Further asking the Chief Minister to meet the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister and discuss the issue in depth, the Congress leader said that the ruling MLAs camping at Delhi shouldn't become another drama.

Claiming that the Manipur Government couldn't even take up action again Assam Rifles for the firing at Pallel other than condemning the incident, Meghachandra urged the Government to convene a meeting of Unified Command pertaining to the Pallel incident, lodge an FIR against the paramilitary force and take up necessary action against them.

The Government must take a Cabinet decision and forward their stand on withdrawing Assam Rifles to the Centre directly, the Congress MLA said and again urged the Chief Minister to lead the MLAs in meeting the Central leaders at New Delhi and persuade the latter to withdraw the paramilitary force from the State.

The Centre will definitely work on peace and withdraw Assam Rifles if the Manipur Government is bold and make their stand clear to the former, the MPCC chief opined.

Normalcy won't return automatically if the Centre is not committed, he said and added that removing barricades, camping at New Delhi will be purposeless if the Centre is not serious enough.

Urging the State Government to call a special session of Assembly so that the hill and valley MLAs can take a collective resolution to end the violence, Meghachandra cautioned that the State will head into an uncertain future if the violence lingers on.

It is unfortunate that the Government listens to only a handful of people when the State literally is burning since the last over four months, he said.

Further stating that the State has failed in every aspect including law and order, the Congress MLAs cautioned that the State may witness an uptick in criminal activities if the people couldn't make ends meet for their families due to the violence.
