Imphal, September 14 2023: IGP (Administration) of Manipur police K Jayanta has conveyed that the death toll of the ongoing violence stands at 175 as of yesterday of which the particulars of 165 have been identified.

He also said that 79 mortal remains have been claimed so far while 96 mortal remains are still at JNIMS (26), RIMS (28) and Churachandpur district hospital (42) .

Addressing a press conference at Police Head- quarters here today, IGP (Adm) K Jayanta continued that 5668 arms were looted from police armouries in the course of the violence of which 1329 have been recovered (till yesterday) .

He said that the figure of missing persons is 32 while 1108 people suffered varied degrees of injuries amid the violence.

Saying that 5172 cases of arson were also reported in the course of the violence including 254 Churches and 132 Temples of which 4786 houses have been reduced to ashes, the police officer maintained that 37,286 people were arrested for violating curfew and spreading rumour.

Altogether 360 bunkers have also been dismantled by the security forces, he added.

IGP (Armed Police/Operation) IK Muivah, on the other hand, said that the Manipur police is working at its level best to restore normalcy in Manipur with the assistance of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), Army and civil administration.

Saying that police face several difficulties in controlling the situation in Manipur and it is a big challenge to them, IGP IK Muivah maintained that the police nonetheless is working round the clock to restore normalcy.

The police have taken up confidence building measures, set up additional checkposts and launched search operations with the assistance of CAPF and Army, he informed.

The senior police officer also said that all barricades set up in between Phougak-chao Ikhai and Kangvai along Tiddim Road of Bishnupur district have been removed.

To a query, IGP IK Muivah said that a joint inspection is carried out every 15 days at the designated camps of SoO militant groups.

Action will be taken up against the cadres found missing during the inspection, he added.

The police have received specific reports about armed people moving freely in the valley districts and the same is unfortunate, he added.

IGP Zone-II Nishit Kumar Ujjwal conveyed that different teams of CAPF had visited Koutruk, Haoraothel, Kharam Thadoi, Bethel, Kadangbandm, Singda areas where instances of firing took place recently and interacted with the people of both sides.

He said that vehicular movements have begun on both National Highway 37 and National Highway-2 .

Saying that 280 trucks from Dimapur reached Imphal today and nearly the same number of trucks have left Imphal for Dimapur, the IGP Zone-II continued that 15 companies of CAPF are deployed along National Highway 37 and another 10 companies on National Highway 2 .

He said Army and Assam Rifles are also deployed at certain vulnerable areas.
