Imphal, December 12:
In the campaign to ban use of two-wheelers by students of Higher Secondary level and below, 115 two-wheelers were confiscated while 15 have been damaged.
For any case of vandalism or other untoward incidents as and when two wheelers are found parked within a 100 metre radius of educational institutions and tuition centres, the authorities of the institutions and tuition centres and the guardians would be held accountable, cautioned DESAM.
Speaking to reporters today, DESAM secretary general LC Santosh said that the drive against riding bikes and two-wheelers by students of High Secondary level and below was launched since October 29 this year after the same prohibition was announced in February last year.
Consequent upon the drive, use of bikes in educational institutions and tuition centres have reduced by about 70 percent.
Concerning the vandalisation of 15 bikes, DESAM clarified that they were a result of opposing the drive without giving any chance to the DESAM volunteers to explain the issue.
The student body also appealed to the Motor Vehicles Department to issue vehicle documents according to rules and not to issue driving licence to under-aged children.
Romesh further disclosed that DESAM volunteers have been entrusted with the task of taking befitting action against student riders and owners of two-wheelers found parked within 100 metres radius of educational institutions and tuition centres.
DESAM launched the campaign following the rising trend of students using motor bikes.
