Imphal, May 31:
Three activists of the Anti-Narcotics and Drug Association were shot dead by unidentified gunmen today at about between 12.30 amd 12.45 pm at the ZEO office complex at Wangoi and at the bridge over Nambul river connecting Sanjenbam and Waheng Khuman under Wangoi police station.
The three deceased are identified as Thangjam Abung (27) of Keibi Mayai Leikai finance secretary of ANDO, Naorem Deben (27) of Sekmaijin secretary-in-charge of the organisation and Likmabam Surjit (22) of Keibi Awang Leikai.
According to police, Abung was found shot dead at a spot in between Waheng Khuman and Sanjenbam while Deben and Surjit were killed at the ZEO office complex, Wangoi.
The three bodies have been deposited at RIMS morgue for post mortem.
Meanwhile a number of civil society organisations have strongly condemned the killing of the three ANDO members.
Speaking to reporters at the IPSA office at Keishampat, ANDO president Naorem ongbi Medha Devi said that even if the three were guilty of anything it would have been much better if prior information was given and their misdeeds made public, instead of just killing them.
Condemning the killing, she said that the incident will only retard the drive taken up against drug abuse and alcoholism.
Civil society organisations have also joined hands and formed a JAC Against the Killing of N Deben, Th Abung and L Surjit.
The JAC has demanded that killers should spell out the reasons for the killing or else the bodies would not be taken back and to take up intense agitation is the demand is not met with.
